Summer Travel Plans? Don’t Leave Your Home Unprotected

Summer vacations are supposed to be relaxing. Yet for many homeowners, the worry about an empty house follows them out the door. Most burglars are not masterminds executing elaborate plans. They are opportunists looking for quick, low-risk targets. A house that appears dark, quiet, and unattended stands out, while one that feels occupied creates enough hesitation to make someone move on.

Why “Lived In” Matters

One of the biggest deterrents to theft is uncertainty. When a home appears lived in, thieves perceive greater risk and lower reward. Simple visual cues matter: lights appearing naturally in the evening, a mowed lawn, no overflowing mailbox, and the occasional car in the driveway. In contrast, dark windows night after night, stacked packages, or neglected landscaping clearly signal vacancy.

Before leaving, place a few lamps on timers and vary the schedule slightly so the pattern feels natural. Pause mail and package deliveries or ask a trusted neighbor to collect them. For longer trips, arrange lawn care or an occasional property check. These steps do more than improve appearances—they disrupt the mental picture that your home is an easy target.

Easy Targets Get Attention

Before you leave, walk your property like a burglar would. Check every door, window, garage door, gate, and shed. Test locks and deadbolts rather than assuming they are secure. Avoid hiding spare keys under doormats, flowerpots, or decorative rocks, as those remain among the first places thieves check.

Secure bicycles, ladders, tools, grills, and outdoor equipment inside locked areas whenever possible. Items left outside can be stolen or even used to gain entry. Removing those opportunities makes your home a harder target.

Technology Helps, but Simplicity Often Wins

Home security technology can add peace of mind without much complexity. Motion-activated lights, video doorbells, and security cameras can alert you to activity while you are away. Before leaving, test batteries, Wi-Fi connections, and app notifications to ensure everything works reliably.

The goal isn’t turning your home into a fortress. It is simply making your home look less predictable and less worth the risk.

Don’t Overlook the Human Element

Trusted neighbors remain one of the strongest defenses. Ask someone reliable to collect unexpected deliveries, check on the property, or watch for storm damage. Real human activity remains one of the best signals that a home isn’t empty.

It is also wise to avoid posting real-time vacation photos or travel updates while you are away. Those posts can advertise that nobody is home.

A little thoughtful preparation goes a long way. By making your home appear active and cared for, you can enjoy your summer travels with greater peace of mind—and return to find everything exactly as you left it.
